Congratulations Philip! June 25, 2007

Philip Pullman just won a tremendous literary honor. I’m so pleased!

Here’s Pullman’s response to the award of the Carnegie of Carnegies.

Tony’s 2007 June 20, 2007

I thought the Tony’s were pretty boring considering the lion share of awards went to The Coast of Utopia and Spring Awakening. I have good things to say about both
of those shows, but they certainly didn’t deserve all the awards, plus that’s just boring to watch. The only award that really thrilled me was Mary Louise Wilson (I’m glad Christine Ebersole won too, but that was more of a sure thing in my mind).

I also thought it was interesting that of the musical numbers presented, Mary Poppins was the only one that wasn’t just a piece of the show, it was a full on commercial. That’s why Disney is a billion dollar company, they know how to advertise.

Two words, y’all

where does she find so many quizzes? June 7, 2007

My New York age is 28

This New York age puts you-generally speaking-into the young category. That’s what you were hoping for, right? Run and tell your friends. Then get drunk (as usual). Then sleep it off. Then pop an Adderall. Then come back and consider experimenting with a more mature type of New York life (just once in a while). Have you ever been to the Village Vanguard or the Living Theatre? Eaten at Elaine’s? Taken a date to Michael Feinstein? Before you laugh, check ’em out and see what old-school NYC experiences you can add to the new.

Does your age reflect how you’re living? Let us know.

What’s your New York age? Take the Time Out New York quiz and find out!

trend-spotting June 6, 2007

Filed under: Manhattan Life — catherineeliza @ 2:39 pm

You know how last year Happy Feet came out, and then everything was penguins, penguins, penguins? I do. I predict that we are ending that era, and moving into a polar bear phase. Here’s my evidence:

1) I just read this book with a polar bear on the cover (this piece of evidence is bogus, because the book was written in 2005, and I just happened to see it recently – but reading this book did heighten my polar bear awareness)

2) The Golden Compass (after seeing/reading this, it will be impossible for everyone not to think polar bears are awesome)

3) Erin and I saw an ad at the train station for vacation in Canada with a polar bear on it.

The point of the story is that I’m just making this up, but if you start seeing more and more polar bears this summer and fall, I’ll be taking full credit for pre-spotting the trend.

*Please leave comments backing up my theory; any comments denying the polar bear trend will be deleted.

Quiz deja vu June 4, 2007

I think I may have taken this quiz before, but I couldn’t find it in my archives, so I posted again.  Can’t complain with the results, even though I felt this quiz was more based on the movie versions of the Austen stories rather than the books, which of course, as a purist, I can’t approve of.I am Elizabeth Bennet!
